7 Flight Safety Information Tips and Best Practices

The ability to travel using various methods is often taken for granted. We hop inside of our cars and drive to our destinations without a second thought. Visiting a different country using air travel can be viewed with the same sentiment. In both cases, safety should be taken very seriously; this is especially true of the latter method.

If you’ve been on an airplane before, you’ve probably been instructed by staff on the best protocols for safety. You can also rest assured that the plane is equipped with trustworthy and reliable aircraft maintenance software. However, do not just leave it up to airline staff to instruct you about flight safety. Here are the seven informative flight safety information tips to know about:

Tip #1: Clothing

Many airplane passengers underestimate the impact of clothing on a flight, but this is an important piece of flight safety information to consider. When you are getting ready to board a plane, try to stray away from dressing lavishly. If your flight happens to be several hours long, you don’t want your chosen attire to stimulate discomfort. Worse yet, this may even become a hazard in the event of an emergency.

For example, wearing high heels or sandals during an emergency landing will work against you on the tarmac. It is always advised that you wear loose clothing, or athletic attire during a flight. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy the hours you have onboard without physically feeling awkward.

Tip #2: Legroom Spacing

All of us are physically built differently, as it pertains to our bodies. Some may have longer legs, while others may not. In any event, if you are sitting in an aisle seat on the plane, be aware of your spacing. Always try to make room for your neighbours, who may need to exit the seating arrangement momentarily.

This is especially true for emergencies that may occur. Should a crisis manifest, everyone in your nearby vicinity will expect their neighbour to make room for an easy exit. Basic legroom principles come down to respecting other passengers; do your best to move when the situation demands it.

Tip #3: Safety Video

Before a flight takes off, you may be dissuaded from watching the inevitable safety video that queues up. Most of us believe we know the requisite safety instructions that are supposed to be followed while onboard. However, it is in your best interest to not only watch the video, but pay close attention.

Flight safety, while onboard a plane, changes every so often. As such, there may be updates to the onboard mechanics that you should be aware of, should the circumstances call for it. Since they aren’t incredibly long, it is in your best interest to pay attention to the video before takeoff.

Tip #4: Emergency Run Kit

When it comes to baggage, most of us will have our standard carry-on and additional luggage if needed. Since we never know when a crisis may manifest during a flight, it is recommended that you create a spare run kit. This small kit can easily fit inside your carry-on, and houses your most important, irreplaceable items.

In the event of an emergency landing, you will be told that you cannot take any of your baggage with you. That is why having a small enough kit that contains your valuable items, such as your passport or credit cards, is important. Make sure you don’t stuff it with multiple things; only your most important items will do.

Tip #5: Oxygen Mask Placement

Although you won’t necessarily have to try on your oxygen mask before taking off, it is critical to know its respective configuration. Your flight attendants should show you how to place your mask on, before takeoff. Should any crisis happen that necessitates the use of the mask, be sure to put it on yourself first.

Then, make sure your neighbours have correctly placed it on their faces. Not only is it common courtesy to help your fellow passengers, but it is regarded as keeping everyone as safe as possible. If nothing happens, remove the mask from your face and await further instruction.

Tip #6: Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

Your flight attendants will often remark how incredibly important your safety is to them. This usually comes in the form of them instructing you to be cognizant of your surroundings. Know where the emergency exit is, in the event of an unforeseen landing. You’ll have to keep in mind the distance from your seat to the door at all times.

Tip #7: Avoid Excessive Drinking

Your onboard flight experience will, most of the time, be comfortable at worst, and outstanding at best. As such, try to keep the alcohol consumption at a minimum. You don’t want to be under the influence if the plane needs to make an unforeseen landing!

Safety, above all else, is of the utmost importance during airplane travel. Although you will be given guidance on best practices, it is still crucial to keep safety information in mind. That way, you won’t endanger your life, or another’s life, during travel.
